Who We Are: Citizens Energy is a 501(c)4 non-profit founded by Joseph P. Kennedy II in 1979.  Beginning with oil-trading ventures in Latin America and Africa, Citizens Energy has used profits from commercial enterprises to channel millions of dollars into charitable programs in the U.S. and abroad. Whether heating the homes of the elderly and the poor, lowering the cost of prescription drugs for millions of Americans, starting solar heating projects in Jamaica and Venezuela, or providing electricity savings from our low-income community solar projects, Citizens creates social ventures as innovative as the businesses that finance them.

Citizens Energy’s current business initiatives include utility-scale solar development, high-voltage transmission development, energy storage/microgrid development, and charitable activities in the energy space. Citizens Energy seeks to develop, own and operate profitable energy projects that support Citizens Energy’s mission of making life’s basic needs more accessible and affordable for people in need.
