About Citizens Wind
Established in 2003, Citizens Wind has developed a portfolio of wind projects in the U.S. and Canada with the potential for generating more than 2,000 megawatts (MW) of wind energy.
Project Development
Citizens Wind manages all aspects of the wind development process — from landowner relations, wind assessment and environmental permitting — all the way through engineering, finance and construction. At each stage in the development process, staff members work closely with partners and local communities to ensure local participation and support.

Our wind projects typically involve the following steps:
  • Prospecting for good wind sites
  • Negotiating site control agreements
  • Measuring the wind resource
  • Project design and engineering
  • Environmental review and permitting
  • Transmission/interconnection
  • Negotiating power purchase agreements
  • Arranging financing
  • Engineering, procurement and construction
Citizens Wind understands that the interests of the landowners and communities where we develop are vitally important to the success of our projects. We spend time in the community not only to answer questions about the wind development process, but also to ask questions about the concerns of our partners and neighbors. In any project, our objective is to maximize the benefits of wind power while minimizing any perceived negative impacts – whether visual, environmental, or cultural. We work hard to address all these and other concerns during the process.
Social Benefits of Citizen Wind Projects
Citizens Wind works in partnership with other wind development companies and with landowners where projects are located. For example, Citizens Wind has partnered with Native American Tribes in the U.S. and Canadian First Nations to develop utility-scale wind projects. In many of our projects, we commit a portion of the profits from our ventures to benefit local programs in the communities where we operate. In this regard, we are serving our larger corporate mission to help make life’s necessities more affordable and available to those in need.
